On the march?

— 3:15 pm

I don’t usually believe strongly enough in one side of a debate to go to a political march type of thing, but I’m thinking about doing this one: tomorrow at 2 PM, there’s a rally at the state capitol against the anti-immigration proposals in Congress.В  I believe if you happen to get born in this country, it just means you’re lucky, it doesn’t mean you’re good.В  If you’re good, you’re good.

I miss my beard a little

— 8:13 pm

I was just looking at a picture of me with a beard when I was at Disney World…I kind of miss my beard!

The whole “educational reform” thing

— 9:59 pm

I’ve probably made it clear by now that I can’t get my brain around the College of Education paradigm or ideology or whatever.В  How can I?В  Everything I read or was told in my education classes was pretty much the opposite of what I came in believing and what I thought worked for me and for other students.

We were told “research shows such-and-such”, but we weren’t shown the research.В  In virtually any other field of study, you can cite some landmark experiment or study that proves the truth of a certain statement.В  In education, one paper cites another paper that cites another paper and there’s no science there.В  In physics, a theory backed with no objective evidence would never gain acceptance.В  In law, if you have no evidence to support your version of the facts of a case or you have no precedents to support your legal reasoning, you’ll be laughed out of court.

Accepting claims that seem to go against my prior experience and knowledge and common sense without any evidence seems crazy.В  It seems like just the sort of thing that one’s hard-earned critical thinking skills are supposed to guard against.

I’m goin’ in

Tomorrow’s the first day of honest-to-goodness student teaching.В  Sort of, I’m just observing for now.В  Wish me luck!

I decided a good reason to marry somebody is so that you can ask for a Roomba for a wedding present.В  Then you can buy a house with that person for the Roomba to run around in.В  And you can do a little dance.

Hair today

— 12:26 pm

Tomorrow, or maybe a little after, I think I’m going to get it cut really short.В  Maybe not to the scalp, but pretty much as short as it’s ever been.В  I’ve been assured that it will grow back (if that’s what I desire).

So I’m still on the three-haircut-a-year plan.

My personal #1 goal for next quarter

— 8:24 pm

It’s not to be more constructivist.В  It’s not to have more inquiry-based activities.В  No, it’s not even to run a more student-centered classroom.В  It’s to not be boring.В  Somebody take me out behind the barn and shoot me if I’m ever boring in a classroom again.

It’s really hard to read comments about yourself, especially ones like: “They should make him go back to school before they let him teach again.”

And I forgot to mention…

— 3:45 pm

…I sent the “baby” back to the “orphanage”.В  Arrgh…me and my metaphors.В  I mean to say I sent a laptop computer back to the seller because it wasn’t in the condition I expected.В  So I’m laptopless again.

I hate lying

— 3:34 pm

And I dislike keeping my mouth shut when I have something I want to say.В  But sometimes I hate the consequences of telling the truth even worse.

I saw that Aleve ad with Leonard Nimoy, and it gave me a great idea for making money from all those aging baby-boomers out there…Star Trek-themed nursing home!

I guess it’s just part of being an adult to have the lurking fear that you’ll make some measly little clerical error that will screw up your life and career forever. Speaking of which, I haven’t finished my taxes yet, which is unusual for me this time of year.

An uncharacteristic mistake

— 9:23 am

For someone who teaches test prep classes, this is a really idiotic thing to do. I took the wrong #*$(#$&@ physics test and I’ll have to sign up again and pay again and take a test that’s virtually identical except has twice as many questions and is twice as long. AAARRRGGGH!
