OUT!

— 12:22 am

I got the last bits out of the old apartment about an hour ago, and I sang to myself, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, where the dogs of society howl; you can’t plant me in your penthouse, I’m going back to my plough.” Whatever that means. Seemed appropriate.

Hell

— 9:28 am

Yes, about 24 hours of pure hell. I probably won’t sleep in that time, and my back will probably be bent at a 90-degree angle. It would help if I could get out of the old apartment by 4 PM today and proceed directly to Dayton after dropping off my keys, but more likely I’ll be coming back from Dayton by around 11:30 with another several hours of work to do and next to no energy left. But the good news is that once 11 AM tomorrow rolls around, I can sleep it off. And sleep I shall…

The other good news is that this is strictly temporary hell, unlike the permanent hell that would have resulted from being a lawyer or public school teacher.

Holy shmlamalalmalmalamla…

— 9:30 pm

…am I tired! Two hours at the computer lab in the morning, then probably four hours of working on the old apartment, then three and a half teaching LSAT…yes, three and a half hours. I’m sblounskched.

Getting there

— 8:51 am

The bedroom in the old place is entirely cleared out, as well as the utility closet. Several hundreds of pounds of junk have been thrown away. Most of the books are now out of the place. I’ll have to figure out whether to save a whole bunch of cleaning supplies and a little bit of food (a couple bags of puffed wheat and a cardboard silo of oatmeal). Oh, and the old record player! I haven’t listened to a record in ages, but I actually own a few dozen of them.

I have to be totally out in less than 48 hours, and tomorrow night I have to go to Dayton to teach. But it’ll happen. I’m on track. Do I look like I’m panicking? Panicking? Panicking?!

My old apartment is looking more and more like a place that’s being moved out of rather than a home, and the new apartment is looking more and more like a home. I have pictures of my nieces and nephew on the fridge now, which is a nice warm touch. It also looks like my comfy queen mattress will fit in this tiny bedroom, if just barely. It’s going to take up like a third of the room. But I spend a third of my time sleeping, now don’t I?

I feel like a lodger

— 12:40 am

It will take a while for me to feel at home here. But I guess it was part of my plan to have the flexibility to pick up and move easily and be able to fit all my stuff in my car. But I will miss having a home of my own. There’s no way I’m going to live here as long as I lived there. It may be a very long time before I live in any one place that long. It’s kind of sad and scary, but also kind of exciting.

Got a window air conditioner

— 10:29 pm

We’ll all keep our fingers crossed that it neither goes crashing down to the sidewalk below onto an innocent pedestrian, nor gushes water all over the carpet.

The Onion isn’t really funny anymore, but…

…hey, I made it in this week!

Just when I have to move…

— 8:10 pm

The forecast is for five straight days of storms.

Well, anyway…I’m here at the new place. I’ve got clothes. I’ve got the Internet. It’ll be okay.

— 9:36 pm

Yeah, and I was going to move when now?

It’ll happen…somehow…maybe I need a chance to be sad about leaving my home of four years. I guess in the past mostly I’ve been happy to move. Either that or less time-limited.

By the way

— 9:12 pm

I’ve got my Internet and Cable shutting off on the 20th, so that should shoo me out of here pretty good.

FRUIT FLIES!!! ARRRRRGH!

— 8:45 pm

Gnats! Gnats! Gnats! Gross, go away!

Of course, as I keep trying to remind myself, I have to be out of this apartment in less than two weeks. I’m in denial, I think. The last time I’d lived in the same place so long it was 1992. But I can’t afford to live here anymore, so…eh, it’ll be okay.

Good and bad

— 11:07 pm

Good:

1. Got three checks in the mail, two of at least $100. Payday’s tomorrow, too.
2. Got tacos at Taco Ninja!
3. Got free food at work.
4. The Country Teasers played at Cafe Bourbon St. Even though I didn’t go, somehow this makes me happy. I, like, know those guys!

Bad:

1. The death of American soccer. Maybe. Real bad.
2. Got free food after I already paid for food. But it was from Taco Ninja, darn it!

Two things about me

— 9:50 pm
  1. I think I like to live life at a slower pace than most people. Or I like to live life at the pace most people would like to if they could, but I actually do something about it.
  2. I really like learning languages!

Almost World cup time…

— 11:44 pm

Will it be boring (Brazil wins, nobody else should both to show up)? Will it be awesome?
